The warm vs. cool tones conversation is one of the most important ones we have with every client at Shear Art Salon. It's not about what's trending. It's about what actually works for your specific hair, skin, and lifestyle — which is exactly what custom color is all about.
What Do "Warm" and "Cool" Even Mean?
In hair color, warm tones pull toward the red, orange, and gold end of the spectrum. Think honey blonde, copper, caramel, chestnut, and auburn.
Cool tones pull toward the ash, beige, and violet end. Think platinum, sandy blonde, espresso, cool brown, and smoky brunette.
Neutral tones sit in the middle — not too golden, not too ashy — and often work beautifully on a wide range of clients.
How We Figure Out Which Direction to Go
There's no single rule, but here's what we're thinking about in your consultation:
Your skin's undertone. This is the big one. Skin undertones are warm (yellow, peachy, golden), cool (pink, red, bluish), or neutral. As a general guide, warm hair tones tend to complement cool skin undertones, and vice versa — but it's more nuanced than a simple formula.
Your natural base. The hair you're starting with matters. Warm tones lift and process differently on dark, cool bases than they do on already-warm hair. Cool tones on the wrong base can go brassy or turn an unexpected shade of green. We factor this in before we ever mix a formula.
Your eye color. Hazel and green eyes often pop with warm, copper, or golden tones. Blue and grey eyes tend to sing alongside cooler, ashier shades. Brown eyes are versatile — they can go either way beautifully.
Maintenance and lifestyle. Cool blondes, for example, tend to require more upkeep to stay bright and avoid brassiness. Some warm brunette shades are incredibly forgiving and grow out seamlessly. Your schedule matters as much as your skin tone.
